The themes that I intend to pursue over the next few months are death, the sacred, the erotic, and the mundane. This image incorporates three of those elements. It is not mundane. |

So people often ask me, "Steve, what's it all about?" "Peeps", I say, "Peeps, it's all about the three L's". So there you have it. |

You can take the boy out of North Dakota, but you can't take North Dakota out of the boy. I stayed at the Lawrence Welk resort on a recent business trip to Escondido, CA. Like N.D. the resort is clean, efficient, and unassuming. |

It's Fran Lester, an old friend originally from Philly, now living in Greenville, SC. I did a photo session with her on a gray morning along the Reedy River before work. What a beauty! |

This cat has been whining that his picture has not been included on this site while all of his friends have. When he's not on the cycling circuit, he is my optometrist friend Sid--a Jaguar, fine clothes, and good friends. |

| Picture of the Week5-24-99 | This is a picture of Diane at Dillard University in New Orleans. Dillard was where her mother, Ms. Velma Wills went to college in the late 1940's. At the time it was an all black school and is still mostly African Americans. The campus is beautiful with all white buildings and rows of oak trees. Diane's niece, Jasmine will be attending Dillard in the fall. |

This event is in honor of those family and friends who have passed. It is derived from the pre-Columbian Indian (Mexican) celebration which occurred at this time of year. When Catholicism was incorporated it was associated with All Saints Day and All Souls Day on November 1-2. It is traditional to build altars with offerings of food, and anything else they liked when alive. |

| Picture of the Week 10-13-98 | The beginning of the Bridge to Bridge Run. Wendy, Kelly, Jim, and I did the 12 km fun run. The route went from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge along the Embarcadaro. I present it here because San Francisco was particularly picturesque that day. |
| Picture of the Week 9-28-98 | Meet my friends Christine and Reuben. Everybody loves them. Reuben is my source for knowledge of Afro-Caribbean music. Christine is my source for knowledge of life. Salsa dancing that's hot. They are new grandparents. And to top it off, they're in love! |

DirectRay versus Screen-Film. Other companies are comparing their digital detectors to 400 speed imaging systems (see AJR, July, 1998). This is a comparison to a 100 speed UV Detail/UVG (the sharpest 100 speed in the world). I saw the original images at the RSNA last year and you can clearly see the fracture much better on the DirectRay image (exposure factors are the same). Why? MTF. Why? No screen caused light spread (blur). |

I've been hanging out at Alta Bates in Berkeley this last week. Many thanks to all who've helped me. |
| Picture of the Week 8-21-98 | This is an image of my Aunt Mary and Cousin Judy in about 1942. The reason I am showing it here is that it comes from a 1942 Kodachrome slide. I've tried to reproduce the color as it actually exists on the slide. Notice the blue cast. Not bad for 56 years. And that Mary is still a looker. Click on the lamp shade to get up close. |
| Pictures of the Week 8-14-98 | The magic of digital imaging. the-dude-dot-com and I went out to photograph the neighborhood today. Jim noticed the green of my tee shirt went well with the colors of a neighborhood sister loft -- Portico. Using my Olympus 600L digital camera, he shot the fat boy. I did the initial enhancements seen in the picture on the left.. Then Jim got a hold of it and you can see the results. Note the sky and the color enhancement. |

Last week was the primary elections in
California. Yours truly, Mr. Political Scientist, has been fairly
apolitical lately, but I did vote. I am one of two or three people
in Oakland who did not vote for Jerry Brown. I finally live somewhere
that I'm considered the conservative. My not voting for Jerry
has more to do with his angry, sour-puss demeanor than his politics.
Laughter is one of the three "L's" by which I try to
live my life. I don't have time for angry, unsmiling people. That didn't stop me from going to Jerry Brown's election night festivities. Brown's "We the People" facility is two blocks from my loft. Maybe he'll be good for the neighborhood. This is my little foray into local photojournalism.Take the loop but come on back.. Hear? |

Margaret had her Annual 39th Birthday Picnic on June 6. The weather was cold and misty, but the hearts were warm. I refuse to talk about El Nino, but I am here to tell you -- April, May, and June have been winter-like. Nuff said. |
| Clint Watch 5-20-98 | Clint Eastwood was shooting a movie right next door to Mike and Sherri's loft. We didn't meet Clint, but the gaffers loved us. Maybe it was the wine we fed them. |
